This is the homepage of the WISDOM project: to explore the Mars in depth.
WISDOM is an acronym for “Water, Ice and Subsurface Deposit Observation on Mars”.
It is a ground penetrating radar (GPR) for the ESA mission ExoMars 2022. The WISDOM GPR aboard the ExoMars rover “Rosalind Franklin” allows us to probe the Martian soil down to a depth of about three meters. The results of that investigation will help:
- to improve the understanding of geology, hydrology and climatic history of Mars
- to find suitable places for the drill experiment
- to better estimate possible hazards for future manned and unmanned missions.
As every radar system, it consists of two parts: the electronics to generate and process the signal, as well as the antenna to transmit the signal to and receive it from the subsurface:
While the electronic box is suited inside the rover, the antenna is placed outside at the rear of the vehicle:
