Welcome

This is the homepage of the WISDOM project: to explore the Mars in depth.

WISDOM is an acronym for “Water, Ice and Subsurface Deposit Observation on Mars”. 

It is a ground penetrating radar (GPR) for the ESA mission ExoMars 2022. The WISDOM GPR aboard the ExoMars rover “Rosalind Franklin” allows us to probe the Martian soil down to a depth of about three meters. The results of that investigation will help:

  1. to improve the understanding of geology, hydrology and climatic history of Mars
  2. to find suitable places for the drill experiment
  3. to better estimate possible hazards for future manned and unmanned missions.

As every radar system, it consists of two parts: the electronics to generate and process the signal, as well as the antenna to transmit the signal to and receive it from the subsurface:

While the electronic box is suited inside the rover, the antenna is placed outside at the rear of the vehicle:
